Superbad (2007)

"You could always subscribe to a site like 'Perfect Ten'. I mean that could be anything, it could be a bowling site. "
"Yeah, but it doesn't actually show dick going in, which is a huge concern . "

The Story:

Long time friends, the outspoken Seth (Jonah Hill) and even-keeled Evan (Michael Cera) are mere weeks away from high school graduation. Practically joined at the hip, the two will be going to different schools in the fall and have grandiose plans of losing their virginity and gaining experience so they don't "suck dick at fuckin' pussy" when they hit the post secondary scene. Adding to their troubles is the fact that they don't want to stick just any girl; they want to get with the primary objects of their affections, Becca (Martha MacIsaac) and Jules (Emma Stone). At the zero hour, the boys get their break when Seth brags to Jules that his friend/whipping post, Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is getting a fake I.D. and can provide booze for her party. Things are looking just magic until the skin and bones Fogell whips out his new identity... 25 year-old McLovin. From Hawaii.

The Review:

The 2000s gave viewers some of the most entertaining comedies of all time and none of them were more charming, hilarious and quotable than the brainchild of writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Without featuring a single scene of nudity and boasting a stellar soundtrack including the likes of Van Halen, Ted Nugent, Biggie and The Guess Who, Superbad took the world by storm and cemented itself as the best teen comedy since Dazed and Confused. Seth, Evan and McLovin rank amongst the greatest comedic characters ever and the performances by the actors are equally as impressive. Chock full of foul, witty language, the dialogue and delivery never feels forced and unnecessary ala Stifler in the first American Pie film. Well-rounded characters mingle with one another in a natural, realistic manner that is entirely plausible, even if the folly of the film is not.

When an armed robber prevents McLovin from scoring the precious booze, two delinquent police officers (Seth Rogen & Bill Hader) arrive at the scene and take an immediate shine to him, seeing younger versions of themselves in the only character in the film as hapless as they are. After catching a ride with the boys in blue, McLovin gets caught up in a drunken whirlwind of criminal chasing, firearm blasting mayhem and eventually finds himself becoming good buds with the cops. I love to sit and ponder the kinds of adventure and mischief McLovin and Officers Slater and Michaels, two of the finest to ever wear the badge, could possibly have gotten into the next weekend. Meanwhile, Seth and Evan stick to their plan of using booze to bring them to the forefront of the party with Seth taking the brunt of the comedy including getting run over by a car and having an unfortunate accident involving a menstruating party dancer.

Finally, at Jules' party, we see the master plans finally unfold and the irony of the drama begins to surface. Scenes of awkwardness, honesty and loyalty take center stage with the characters at long last coming closer to understanding one another and veering into a path of self-discovery. Realizing it's not always best to take the easy way out, this trio does what never even crossed Benji, Huey and Bobby from Lemon Popsicle's minds - they learn. Superbad is one of a kind and will deservedly be talked about for years to come as one of the newly crowned king teen comedy hijinx. Panama! (Brett H.)
